Burton berkson described the use of lipoic acid, along with silymarin and selenium, to treat three patients with extensive liver disease caused by hepatitis c. Preliminary research suggests that the alpha lipoic acid found in supplements may be more biologically active than when bound to this protein in food. However, human studies show that alpha-lipoic acid only slightly impacts weight loss. In germany, lipoic acid has been used to help diabetics with their blood sugar (As well as with complications of diabetes such as diabetic neuropathy). Lipoic acid is a direct antioxidant, although any increase in radical scavenging activity in vivo is likely transient. A more recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 30 patients with type 2 diabetes found that intravenous infusion of 600 mg of lipoic acid improved the response to the endothelium-dependent vasodilator acetylcholine but not to the endothelium-independent vasodilator, glycerol trinitrate. A 300 mg alpha lipoic acid dosage can be especially helpful for promoting healthy metabolic function for people on restricted diets. Lipoic acid is available as a dietary supplement without a prescription in the us. The other health benefits of this supplement also make it worthwhile. Packer and colleagues suggest that ala may also have much broader use in treating other diseases and may have general health benefits when taken as a daily supplement like other antioxidants. Pre-treatment and post-treatment with lipoic acid, respectively, prevented and reversed lipopolysaccharide (Lps)-induced lung histopathological alterations in rats through nrf2-mediated ho-1 upregulation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of alpha-lipoic acid (La) supplementation on oxidative stress markers in patients with schizophrenia. Lipoic acid may also trigger antioxidant defense, enhance cellular glucose uptake, and modulate the activity of various cell-signaling molecules and transcription factors. If you choose to use alpha-lipoic acid, use it as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider. First, antioxidant properties allow alpha-lipoic acid to neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which is linked to damage that can increase heart disease risk. Alpha-lipoic acid has been shown to lower several markers of inflammation. Alpha lipoic acid has so many uses, it is like magic in a bottle. It has long been presumed that alpha-lipoic acid can aid in the control of glucose by increasing the speed in which the blood sugar is metabolized. Meanwhile, most other antioxidants are either water- or fat-soluble. The effect of high-dose lipoic acid on glucose utilization has been primarily examined in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Apha-lipoic acid can combine with these drugs to lower blood sugar levels, raising the risk of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. In addition to the physiological functions of protein-bound lipoic acid, there is increasing scientific and medical interest in potential therapeutic uses of pharmacological doses of free (Unbound) lipoic acid.

There is confusion between alpha-lipoic acid and alpa linolenic acid because both are sometimes abbreviated ala.
