According to some research, ala, because it is a potent antioxidant, may help reduce oxidative stress. Vitamin e recycling mediated by alpha-lipoic acid is dependent on vitamin c (Ascorbate) and ubiquinol. It may also exert antioxidant effects in biological systems through transitional metal chelation. Alpha-lipoic acid should not be used in place of medication prescribed for you by your doctor. Cytosolic and mitochondrial systems for nadh- and nadph-dependent reduction of alpha-lipoic acid. Feeding acetyl-l-carnitine and lipoic acid to old rats significantly improves metabolic function while decreasing oxidative stress. Most antioxidants are either fat or water-soluble. Alpha lipoic acid ir is an immediate-release softgel, which rapidly releases ala to promote optimal absorption, especially when taken as directed on an empty stomach. Source materials: Alpha lipoic acid is made by chemical synthesis. In cells, la is reduced to dihydrolipoic acid, which is generally regarded as the more bioactive form of la and the form responsible for most of the antioxidant effects and for lowering the redox activities of unbound iron and copper. For example, the upregulation of the nrf2 pathway by lipoic acid in cultured hepatocytes and in the liver of obese or diabetic rats prevented lipid overload-induced steatosis And cell death. Consequently, blood glucose concentrations should be monitored closely when lipoic acid supplementation is added to diabetes treatment regimens. One study of 73 people with cardiac autonomic neuropathy, which affects the heart, found that subjects reported fewer signs of the condition when taking 800 mg of alpha-lipoic acid orally compared to placebo. When considering the biological activities of supplemental (Unbound) lipoic acid, it is important to keep in mind the limited and transient nature of the increases in plasma and tissue lipoic acid (See metabolism and bioavailability). Digestive proteolytic enzymes cleave the r-lipoyllysine residue from the mitochondrial enzyme complexes derived from food but are unable to cleave the lipoic acid- l- lysine amide bond. Yet other studies show that lipoic acid may help preserve more brain tissue after a stroke. Following single oral doses r, s-lipoic acid (Racemic mixture), peak plasma concentrations of r-lipoic acid were found to be 40%-50% higher than s-lipoic acid, suggesting a differential absorption in favor of the r-enantiomer (6, 8, 11).
