Ala is an antioxidant that protects against damage to the body’s cells from free radicals. Since humans can only produce ala in small amounts, many people turn to supplements to increase their intake. Because of it’s dual solubility, alpha lipoic acid can function in both fatty and aqueous parts of a cell and is capable of defending against a wide variety of invading free radicals. In this sense, the chronic hyperglycemia that is present in t2dm activates several unusual metabolic pathways in organisms, such as the sorbitol pathway (Or that of aldose reductase), nonenzymatic protein glycosylation, glucose autooxidation, modification of protein kinase c activity, pseudohypoxia, lipoprotein-altered metabolism, and cytokine-associated alteration. Alpha lipoic acid ir is an immediate-release softgel, which rapidly releases ala to promote optimal absorption, especially when taken as directed on an empty stomach. This has prompted several investigations into the use of antioxidants as a complementary therapeutic approach. Alpha-lipoic acid in the treatment of diabetic peripheral and cardiac autonomic neuropathy. Lipoic acid is a direct antioxidant, although any increase in radical scavenging activity in vivo is likely transient. In fact, lipoic acid has been shown to increase glucose uptake by plasma membranes through recruitment of glucose transporter-4, a mechanism shared with insulin; moreover, dihydrolipoic acid scavenges superoxide and peroxyl radicals, and facilitates vitamin-e recycling. An early clinical trial in 13 patients with type 2 diabetes found that a single intravenous infusion of 1,000 mg of lipoic acid improved insulin-stimulated glucose disposal (I. Alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin e have synergistic effects, as determined in models of oxidant radical lesions. Packer and other researchers tested methods for boosting antioxidant levels they ran into a problem when attempting to increase cellular glutathione levels. Yet, measures of specific neuropathic impairments (Secondary outcomes) improved with lipoic acid supplementation. Alpha-lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble, which allows it to work in every cell or tissue in the body. The reduction of claudication symptoms appears to be fairly potent with ala supplementation, although there is not a large body of evidence overall. Lipoate and alpha-tocopherol are contained in many foods that are often part of the human diet, they are inexpensive, and side affects by chronic or elevated supplementation with these antioxidants are very rare. In addition, lipoate can reduce glutathione disulfide, ubiquinone, dehydroascorbate radical that contribute to ve regeneration. 75 In an experimental setting, 7-month treatment of diabetic rats with lipoic acid resulted in prevention or attenuation of albuminuria, transforming growth factor beta, and glomerulosclerosis. I read online that alpha lipoic acid helps stabilize your blood sugar and i noticed that i felt some energy with it during the day and my appetite was lessened.

Ischemic heart disease and antioxidants: Mechanistic aspects of oxidative injury and it’s prevention. Ala is easily absorbed when taken orally, and once inside cells it is quickly converted to it’s most potent form, dihydrolipoic acid, an even more potent free-radical neutralizer. Since taking lipoic acid with a meal decreases it’s bioavailability, it is generally recommended that lipoic acid be taken 30 min prior to a meal (See also metabolism and bioavailability). Pharmacokinetic studies in humans have found that about 30%-40% of an oral dose of a racemic mixture of r-lipoic acid and s-lipoic acid is absorbed (6, 7). There are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for many herbal compounds and some marketed supplements have been found to be contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Since this product contains ALA which is very dangerous to take (when not according to half-life in small doses, e. i. according to the work of dr. Andrew Cutler) if you have any level av mercury toxicity (which everybody has to some degree), wouldn’t this product be far more damaging than helpful?
Anyone using it with diabetes type 2 or diabetic neuropathy? Any feedback? Thanks
if i eat 2 tablet, can it cause gastric? it has quite strong acid as vitamin c?

Andrew Cutler) if you have any level av mercury toxicity (which everybody has to some degree), wouldn’t this product be far more damaging than helpful?

been consuming this for at least 14 years with plenty of mercury in my teeth. no problems that i can tell. i use it as an adjunct with coenzyme q10 and l carnitine. i’ve heard ala is used in chelation, but not aware of how or in what size doses. i do know my ecg tests for years always shock the doctors because they are outstanding considering my age. the three are taken precisely for my heart health.
You cannot use alpha lipoic acid if you have silver amalgam dental fillings or even a speck from an old filling left under a crown or bridge. ALA will take the mercury out of your filling and throw it in your system, making you far worse. If you are free of such fillings, but are possibly mercury toxic, (mercury can cause diabetes), then you should only take ALA on a specific schedule based on the half life of ALA in the body, which is every 3 hours during the day and 4 at night, and repeat this for 3 days and 2 nights at the minimum. This ensures that more mercury will be excreted rather than simply redistributed around the body and possibly to places where it can do harm, like the brain or organs.
I have no trouble eating 2 at a time. i have 2 in morning and one later in the day, that being said if you have a sensitive stomach you may not be able to. everyone is different and and reacts differently to substances. good luck and do heed warnings in regard to low blood sugar as the first couple days i used lipoic acid i definitely noticed some of those symptoms. Good luck
I have been taking this supplement for nearly five years. No negative effects observed (I keep my fingers crossed!). But – what is one man’s mean is another man’s poison hahaha.
