They are certainly similar. Suntheanine is the best-known name in theanine; their quality is unassailable. I find the AlphaWave to be equally good (see my review!). I have used both extensively and find them both highly satisfactory. The AlphaWave is a bit less expensive; it also comes with a free Certificate of Analysis conducted by an independent lab. In both cases, the quality is extremely high and the price surprisingly low. As I said, the AlphaWave is a bit cheaper so that is what I use. I believe theanine is best assimilated on an empty stomach, although it can be taken with food also. For increased concentration, take with coffee. For relaxation, take with a quality magnesium supplement. Both products are outstanding. There is very limited research on the effect of L-theanine during pregnancy, and so I would probably recommend against it on the off chance of negative effects. L theanine blocks excitatory stimuli at glutamate receptors in the brain while stimulating production of the inhibitory, relaxing neurotransmitter GABA. What effect this may have on a child’s neural development remains largely up in the air.
