To establish the connection between reduced glutathione and heart failure, benjamin mated mutant alpha b-crystallin mice that carried too much g6pd with mice that had far lower levels. It helps replenish and create glutathione.

Early research suggests that increasing glutathione levels may strengthens your immune response against bacteria and viruses, but more research will be required to confirm this. This can create significant fluctuations in antioxidant levels; only a twofold change in the level of vitamin e succinate is known to cause marked alterations in gene expression. Glutathione has strong antioxidant properties, meaning that it protects cells from the damage that occurs when chemicals react with oxygen. 27 Idebenone, a synthetic analog of coenzyme q10 with antioxidant properties, protected guinea pigs against noise-induced hearing loss. Subsequently, identifying ways in which optimal availability of cysteine is achieved has been a primary approach in an effort to maintain the biosynthesis of reduced glutathione. This is a completely separate mechanism from it’s antioxidant properties. Another big misconception is that antioxidants are interchangeable. In many instances, people can have mutations in the enzymes that catalyze the production of glutathione from homocysteine. However, it is a weaker antioxidant than a-tocopherol.
