In another randomized, placebo-controlled trial of calcium and/or vitamin d 3 (Record trial), the evaluation of the effect of 1,000 mg/day of calcium (Alone or with 800 iu/day of vitamin d) reported no significant increase in the rate of mortality due to vascular disease in 5,292 participants ages 70 years and older. It’s important to note, however, that some herbal supplements can interfere with prescription medications, so read labels carefully and consider consulting your doctor or pharmacist before taking them. If patients want to avoid the possible increase in risk of cardiovascular disease due to calcium supplementation, they can optimize their calcium intake with dietary calcium. Increasing dietary protein intake enhances intestinal calcium absorption, as well as urinary calcium excretion. In healthy people, calcium supplementation is not necessary for maintaining bone mineral density, and carries risks that outweigh any benefits. Ask your provider whether you need to take a vitamin d supplement.
